Plumbing Soldering Tools: Equipment You Will Need for Mending Copper Water Pipes in Your Home

A: Three things: Flux, solder and a blow torch.

Plumber's Flux
In joining copper plumbing pipes, flux serves two purposes:

Hot Air Soldering

First, flux is an acid that is inert at room temperature and becomes reactive at high temperatures. So why is an acid needed when soldering copper plumbing pipes? The tin-silver solder used by plumbers bonds really well to copper, but not to copper oxide. Oxides are the byproduct of oxidation, the reaction between metal and oxygen. Since oxygen is a big part of the air we breathe, copper plumbing pipes are always covered by a thin layer of oxide which has to be cleaned off before they can be joined with solder. However, at high temperatures, oxidation happens almost instantaneously. This means all the oxidation that was cleaned off returns as soon as a copper pipe is heated. The acid flux burns the oxides away as they form and gives the solder a pristine copper surface with which to bond.

Secondly, flux is a wetting agent. Once in liquid form, solder behaves just like any other liquid and forms into drops as a result of surface tension. This behavior prevents the solder from naturally flowing into and filling the joint between the two pipes. Combining the solder with the flux once both are heated and in liquid form reduces the surface tension and draws the liquid solder into the joint, filling it. The force with which the flux draws the solder is strong enough that the solder can be applied to the bottom of a plumbing pipe joint and the flux will pull it, against the force of gravity, to the top.

Plumbing Solder
Solder is a metal with a significantly lower melting point than the metals being joined. Typically solder is a an alloy, or a combination of two metals. Today, plumbers use a silver-tin alloy when installing copper pipe meant for potable water. However, up until the 1990's lead-tin alloys were most commonly used in plumbing because lead was cheaper than silver and was more easily worked once the joint was formed. Use of lead based solder continued even after the harmful effects of lead were known because it was thought that the amount of lead entering the water supply from the soldered pipe joints was too low to cause harm. Since it is now known that even small doses of lead can be harmful, all copper plumbing for potable water is done with lead-free silver solder.

Plumber's Blow Torch
People familiar with soldering electronic components will be familiar with soldering irons. However, when working with copper pipe a blowtorch is required. This is due to the conductive nature of copper and the sizes of the pieces that plumbers typically work with. Copper is one of nature's best conductors, both of electricity and of heat. That's why even a small copper plumbing pipe has sufficient surface area to dissipate heat faster than any iron could supply it. That's why a blowtorch is typically used. Even with a blowtorch, however, it is important that the copper pipes being soldered are dry as even a small amount of water can cause the heat to dissipate too quickly, cooling the solder before it has time to make a proper joint.

Old School Auto Body Repair & Leading

Until the 60's most all metal straightening was accomplished with the use of a pick hammer, a body file and a solder box containing the proper elements and tools. The metal used by auto manufactures before the 80's was of the cold roll variety with a gauge of 14 to 16 and was very malleable, making it rather soft, easy to shape and straighten with the use of the pick hammer and dolly. A sharp body file was then applied to cut the metal to a smooth finish and to bring out the high and low places.

Hot Air Soldering

Where the metal may be a little thin or rough to pick, the the body solder (leading) would be applied. This also is where the final finishing will take place with the body file plus more picking to assure a smooth flat surface.

Hot Air Soldering

Where soldering is needed the metal must be perfectly clean. All paint must be removed and all rust or other contaminates are removed with the use of a torch for heat and Mauriac acid. (Do not inhale the fumes). An electric drill, air drill or wire brush are also handy to remove contaminants.

The solder must be a 30/70 composition. The 30% tin is needed for tinning the metal and acts as a binding agent so the lead would adhere to the metal surface. Tinning the area where the solder was to be applied was accomplished with the use of a acetylene torch, soldering salts, a stick of solder and a rag.

The area to which the solder is to be added must be perfectly cleaned, solder salts applied then heated hot enough to melt the solder. while keeping the area hot, use a rag to wipe the solder over the entire area to be soldered. Now you are tinned and ready to add more solder to the tinned area as a filler.

When adding the solder, a wooden paddle is used to spread the solder over the surface. The surface of paddle must be dipped occasionally in heated bees wax to stop the solder from sticking to the paddle.

Soldering is only used when the straightening could not be accomplished with the pick, dolly, and file. Now, what do you think, are you ready to give it a try? Soldering Iron Safety Tips

For many of us, soldering irons are ordinary, everyday tools used for a variety of applications. These indispensable little irons, which allow users to meld different metals together by heating them to the point of melting and applying a filler metal, can be used for tasks including metalwork, crafts projects, home improvement, car repair, electronics repair, and more. But make no mistake about it: Soldering irons can be very dangerous if the proper safety precautions are not taken. When in use, the tip of a soldering iron will exceed 700 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature - more than enough heat to seriously injure somebody or inflict damage on property and surroundings. Here are some soldering safety tips to keep in mind at all times:

Hot Air Soldering

Always solder in a well-ventilated area, as the smoke given off by the iron can be extremely irritating to lungs and mucus membranes. Avoid breathing in the smoke by placing your head to the side, rather than directly over your work, and wear a protective mask if necessary. Use a fire-resistance surface such as plasterboard, or invest in a special mat intended for soldering. This will help you avoid mishaps that could burn carpeting, melt plastic or mar woodwork. When plugging in your iron, make sure not to overload the outlet. If there are too many appliances plugged into a particular outlet, unplug some of them first, or choose a different location altogether. Never set your soldering iron down on anything other than a specially made iron stand! This could damage your iron as well as the surface you're setting it down one. Replace your iron immediately if the electrical cord becomes frayed, worn or otherwise compromised. Take care to wear heat-resistance gloves or use needle nose pliers to grip objects that you're soldering, particularly small pieces. This will help you avoid accidentally touching the tip of the iron with your fingers and sustaining a potentially serious - and very painful - burn. Don't leave your iron plugged in after you're finished using it, and never leave a hot iron unattended. Always wash your hands after you finish using your soldering iron. One of the components of solder is lead, which can be toxic if ingested or absorbed into the skin.

The Blazer SI-100 Excalibur, multi-purpose, butane torch and hot air soldering kit is a tool kit that provides tools for soldering, hot air blowing and torch flame needs. The torch creates a precise flame emitting from a nozzle head, allowing direct heat application to an object. It is commonly used for detailed purposes such as brazing, plumbing, soldering, heating, jewelry making, and culinary, dental, and lab applications. Tools within the kit are also used for electronic, automotive, woodworking, lapidary, and general maintenance.

The SI-100 is a multi-purpose tool kit, providing a self-igniting and cordless soldering iron, hot air blower and refillable butane gas torch. The set includes five, interchangeable tip choices: reflector, hot air blower, knife, one 3.5-millimeter chisel and one 3.0-millimeter diagonal. It also comes with a wrench, sponge, and one tube of 60/40 coiled silver tube of solder. The torch features a child-resistant mechanism, and an instant ignition switch.

The torch houses a piezoelectric ignition system, which is based on a pressurized molecular reaction, and requires no electric connection. Piezoelectric energy occurs when the trigger is activated, releasing a small, spring-loaded internal hammer that strikes a crystal, producing a spark and resulting in gas flame ignition.

With a maximum flame temperature of 2,500 degrees F, the torch has a 7.0-gram gas capacity, weighs 4.9 ounces and is 9.0 (l) inches. The case measures 10.25 (l) x 4.38 (w) x 1.5 (h) inches. This product is intended strictly for use in professional and industrial environments. In accordance with federal regulations, home use of this product is prohibited.
