Homemade Solar Panels - 3 Things To Take Note Of When You Build Your Own PV Panels

There are many benefits you can enjoy when you build your own solar panels. Some of these include lower costs, satisfaction of building a project with your own ability and learning more about photovoltaic and the awesome power of solar energy.

Hot Air Soldering

However there are a few things you must take note of when you build your own PV panels. Otherwise you can get discouraged along the way. This is not what you want, so it will be good for you to take note of these points:

Hot Air Soldering

1. Plan the electrical connections for the solar cells before you begin building your panel frame

You have to connect your solar cells in series and in parallel to achieve the ideal output voltage and current you want. You have to physically put them in their order and plan for the space they're going to take up within the solar panel frame.

It is not difficult to solder up the solar cells. But if you get the connections wrong, it will be quite a hassle to redo the connections. Therefore you must get things right before you start and have a plan to avoid short-circuits inside the panel.

2. Use the correct type of cable to transmit electricity to the battery banks

You have to use the correct cable thickness. If you use thicker cables, you will end up paying more. If you use thinner cables, your solar power system will experience unnecessary power loss and voltage drop.

In order to avoid this, you can use a standard formula and a cable size reference table to guide you. A common standard that is being used is the American Wire Gauge (AWG). Refer to that.

3. Use the correct spacing between the roof and the solar panels during installation

During installation, you must make sure that there is sufficient ventilation all around your PV panel. This is because temperature affects the performance of the photovoltaic semiconductors. When temperature increases, power output drops. Therefore you must keep PV panels cool at all times to ensure efficiency.

One of the easiest ways to cool your solar panels is to make sure there is at least 6 inches of air gap between the PV panel and the roof. This allows enough space for hot air to escape from underneath the PV panels.

As hot air escapes, it creates a low air pressure region that must be filled by cooler air around that space. When cool air goes under the solar panels, temperature is regulated. This cycle repeats itself to bring heat away from your PV panels.
